The Week Ahead, March 2-5

Return of the MAC
Tuesday, March 3, 7:00PM Toledo @ Central Michigan

This matchup could very well determine first place in the MAC West. Both teams are tied atop the standings at 11-5 and both will be favored in their regular season finales. Therefore, whoever wins this game will more than likely win the MAC West. Central Michigan could have had the upper hand, but they dropped their last game to next to last place Northern Illinois. By 18 points. It was their first loss in their last 7 games, but the Chippewas have little time to sort out their problems because Toledo has won 9 of 11 coming in. The Rockets have lost 5 MAC games by a combined 16 points, so they won't be blown out. They did lose their first meeting against CMU, though, but that was in early January. It will be a tight game and one that could determine top seeding in the MAC Tournament.

Tuesday, March 3, 7:00PM Kent St. @ Bowling Green

Kent St. got a big win over Central Michigan on January 27. Since that game, they have been just 4-5 to fall out of first place in the MAC East. They are still just a game behind Bowling Green. The Falcons are 6-2 in their last 8 games, but they have a tough stretch to end the season with games against the two teams who are tied for second, a game behind them in the standings. If they can win those games, they win the MAC East. If they drop one of those games, they risk losing their title. This game will be a low-scoring affair. Both teams score around 65 points per game and give up just over 60 per contest. If either team scores 70, they probably win.

A-10 Out of 10
Tuesday, March 3, 7:00PM Rhode Island @ Dayton

Rhode Island needs this game. They had Davidson on the ropes last week, but they could not put the Wildcats away. They are still tied for first in the A-10, but they have no real signature wins. A win over Dayton would be a step in the right direction, and it would keep them in contention for the A-10 regular season title. The Flyers just got their big win - a weekend victory on the road against VCU - but they are also tied for first place and would love nothing more than to win the regular season championship too. This game means more to Rhode Island in terms of NCAA Tournament qualification, but it will be a hotly contested matchup regardless.

Thursday, March 5, 9:00PM VCU @ Davidson

Davidson is still a bubble team, but they are trending in the right direction. They have won 7 in a row and gotten 2 wins over George Washington and 1 over Rhode Island in that stretch. Still, none of those wins have the same national appeal as a win over VCU would. The Rams are just 4-5 in their last 9 games, but they are still the team everyone looks to in the A-10. If Davidson can get a win over Havoc, they can move themselves from on the bubble to in the tournament. They can also stay in first place in the A-10. VCU finds themselves a game behind first now and needs the win to stay alive in the regular season race.

Orion's Sun Belt
Thursday, March 5, 8:00PM Georgia St. @ UL Monroe

Georgia St. needs to have a talk with whoever makes the schedules in the Sun Belt. The Panthers find themselves in a 3-way tie for first place and finish the season with 2 games against the 2 teams they are tied with. The first of those games is Thursday night against UL Monroe. The Warhawks had won 6 in a row, but they have now dropped 2 of their last 3 games to get to this point.
